I accidentally deleted ALL of my "favorites" (aka "bookmarks"), which I'd spent years collecting, and many many hours organizing. Had stuff in there I'll probably never even find again.

Anybody wanna provide me with cool, "essential," fun, etc links? I've lost everything. Sure I can try and find most of it again, but I'm still in the denial stage and it feels hopeless.

I got a lot of great links from this forum...for example what exactly is the url for LightintoAshes' blog? Damn I'm pissed.

Jim -

They are probably in your Recycle Bin. Click on the Recycle Bin icon, select all the files that look like what you accidentally flushed and then click on the "Restore" tab.

in addition to the links provided by vapors and hasher you might also try these 2 powerful search engines: http://totallyfuzzy.blogspot.com/

just type grateful dead into search box, click and see what comes up

i c/p my fav links into notepad, and store it outside active computer, in case the computer explodes or something. this system comes very handy when changing machines

There's also the old fashioned way - every now and then, print the list out - you know, on paper ...

I'm pretty aggressive about backing things up on my work computer, since a certain someone in my office has a knack for misfiling, losing, and accidentally deleting our shared files. I'm constantly forwarding myself files from home to work computer and vice versa, and copying things from the shared files to my personal files, just to be sure that more than one copy exists of things I've worked on.

I am phenomenally bad about backing anything up. I haven't (yet) come seriously unstuck workwise because I mislaid a file, or lost any music or other digitalized info that when push came to shove I discovered I could easily live without. I think I have this really cynical, fatalistic attitude that if it's going to go, it's going to go. Just like my physical and mental faculties at an asymptotic rate.

Ah, this is where I have you beat: everything I have, and I mean everything, is always in five places: home laptop; school desktop; ext drive one (500 gb); ext drive two (monthly); 16 gb portable for little, daily files (transf. daily, and I mean daily).

I've had over 20 puter failures over 26 yrs. Of course, I've had > 60 puters, so it's a numbers game (work gives any over 3 yrs "away" as backups and I collect them for students, etc.).

But, I are paranoid!

Jim F-

I send everything I want to remember/find later to here:

http://www.evernote.com/

It's free. And, because it is online, it's user-specific and not computer-specific. I send webpages, craigslist listings, blog ideas, my pix, voice recordings, receipts and shipping info from amazon, plane tickets, Furthur tickets. If you print neatly, it'll OCR your handwritten notes.

I'll put some of my work on there and then while I am traveling it is available to me anytime I have online access.

That's the TOOTMO Tech Tip of the Day.

Maybe this is just me, but I just memorize the web sites that I want to visit. Anytime I find material that I want to save (words/pictures/video/music), I just download said material to my disk or backup drive. I find this useful because more than once, one of my favorite web sites has gone belly-up (I can think of four times when this has happened).

I periodically attempt (operative word: attempt) to clean out my Favorites, which tend to get heavy on shows to hear/finish hearing/check out, etc (and heavy on things I forgot why I favorited and things that -- gasp! -- aren't even GD-related). Most of my favorited GD sites are mentioned already by hasher and vapors, but here are a few others:

http://www.deadbase.com/ (IMO the search function doesn’t work well; do I have an old url here?)

ftp://gdead.berkeley.edu/pub/gdead/interviews/ (tons of fun interviews)

http://artsites.ucsc.edu/GDead/agdl/ (Annotated lyrics)

I also put stuff in a word document periodically. Hmmm, didn't think of the exploding-computer possibility ...

Sorry to hear about your mishap.
Your info may still be on your computer but just hidden.
Here are a couple of places you can download programs to try and recover. They are not free, but not too expensive either. It may be worth a try for you. I recently used one of them to recover some photos of my daughter's that she had messed up while loading from the camera to the computer.

Good luck!!

Yup; that was how I changed "it" to google; but that is my "entry pt" for anything I do, so other than bookmarking this place, "work" and google, I don't really do much else...it does seem that "googling" is easy enough, at worst, adding a couple steps.

I suppose I should make more of how I don't surf the web and how much more productive I am--maybe even do a linear regression in which "# of bookmarks" is the independent variable, and "productivity" (measure by ME of course), is dependent, and see if it works? I predict a negative relationship, with a slope of -0.33, and an R2 of ~ 25%. P < 0.001 if anyone's asking.

If you suggest "how about doing a multiple LR, with TIME at site included, you @#$%&* smart-ass Tell?", then I'd figure it might show something altogether different, eh?

Someone should tally up how much time gets wasted by the incessant cataloging of where you are, when you were, how it was, how much time you spent doing it, and how surprising it is that you remember any of it all on account of how fantastically wasted you were at the time.

And don't get me started on top fucking tens...

This place gets more like facebook with a soundtrack every day.

Also depending on how often you visited certain sites, many of them may still be in your history. You could also open up Temporary Internet files and cookies to remind you of what was there.

Sorry--I know you really didn't mean it like I've paraphrased above, BUT that's how I read it!

I think that applies to all of us "mid-life crisis" sorts round here, ya know!?

I am now trying to decide how to spend my "non-productive" time: making bookmarks, or sorting thru my catalogue (on the only "hard drive" that matters--cranial; is that external?) of potential "top tens" to irritate the beejeebers outta Rob (who I know will take this attempt at humor in the right spirit).

Too bad I can't "back-up" that cranial HD; or even issue a "global re-set" to some prior, predegradation time?

The way I see it, with the average post you can expect maybe 4-5 responses before seeing the discussion branch off into territory you never could have imagined at the start. This is not to say we are not able to stay on point some of the time, for I have seen quite a few threads that really manage to maintain a core idea from top to bottom. And even in this rather demented mutation seen here, we have at least stayed true to the original computer theme.

Haha it's cool, man, I'm getting a kick out of where this has gone actually. I suppose a guy who makes a post about losing all his bookmarks probably comes across as someone who takes things too seriously, but I'm totally not, I don't at all mind a good thread hijack or joke at my expense. "Facebook with a soundtrack" in particular cracked me up.

It's not the end of the world, it's more all the time I'd spent organizing everything that I hated losing. Lots and lots of links to shows I wanted to stream and/or download, a whole bunch of links to torrents I've been meaning to get to on dime, LL, WT, Trader's Den, etc. All kinds of rapidshare and yousendit links, youtube links, stuff like that. I had folders for all my favorite artists, with subfolders for torrents, interviews, articles, pictures, you name it (my Floyd section is the one I particularly hated to lose, Floyd music and info isn't quite as organized on the internets as GD stuff is). Then all the easy to replace but time consuming ones like here, my email, various message boards, etc.

At any rate, I appreciate the links people have posted. Long story of how I lost it, but I intentionally clicked on "permanently delete," so the recycle bin is not an option. I also tried running a system restore, but that didn't work either. I'm at the acceptance part of the grief cycle now. Just gotta remind myself how 10 years ago I'd have never even imagined I would have had all that music and information and such all categorized and one simple click away, and how I managed to get on with life just fine back then. It still sucks though.
